North and west of Everglades National Park, Big Cypress is mainly bald cypress, Taxodium distichum, sloughs. During the winter, the foliage is down on the cypress trees, allowing a lot of light to reach the surface of the water. The bromeliads were just coming into bloom.
There are plenty of gators, Alligator mississippiensus.

Double-crested cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus)
Black vulture (Coragyps atratus)
Turkey vulture (Cathartest aura)
Belted kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon)
Marsh wren (Cistothores palustris)
Burrowing owl (Athene canicularia)
